AI is here to stay. But does this new technology threaten to redefine the very essence of what it means to create art?
The art world has always been a place where creativity meets commerce, and local artists have long struggled to gain recognition, fair compensation, and respect in their communities. Artificial Intelligence (AI), once a promising tool to assist artists, is beginning to disrupt the local art scene in ways that stifle creativity and siphon revenue away from those who need or deserve it most.
The appeal of AI-generated art is totally understandable—it’s quick, it’s often free or very cheap, and it can produce highly realistic and hyper-focused images that once required years of training and experience to create. But this apparent convenience is costing local artists more than we might realize. AI art is undermining the artistry, originality, and human effort that local artists pour into their work.
AI Devalues Artistic Effort and Originality
One of the key characteristics of true artistry is originality. Local artists spend years honing their craft, finding their unique style, and pouring their personal experiences and perspectives into their creations. AI, on the other hand, generates art by synthesizing existing works, piecing together patterns, and mimicking styles—all in seconds. It might look beautiful on the surface, but it’s essentially meaningless. This lack of originality is something consumers and art lovers need to recognize, as the value of art lies not just in the final image, but in the journey, intention, and individuality of its creator.

With AI art flooding social media, marketplaces, and even galleries, consumers can become numb to the value of human-made art, seeing it as just another visual among the thousands they scroll past each day. This threatens to undermine the appreciation of true craftsmanship.
Cutting into Artists’ Livelihoods
Beyond creativity, there is a very real financial impact AI has on local artists. AI tools, with their endless capacity for producing new images, are eating away at the revenue local artists once relied upon. Clients who would have commissioned an artist for a logo, poster, or illustration can now turn to AI platforms for a fraction of the price. And while some might argue that AI-generated art is simply another competitor in a free market, the reality is that AI does not “compete” fairly. It pulls from the existing pool of artwork without compensation or credit to the original creators.
Many local artists also report a decline in interest for their work in settings where AI has made inroads. Art markets, online platforms, and even local businesses seeking custom designs are opting for AI-generated content rather than supporting local talent. As the market shrinks, so too do the opportunities for artists to earn a living from their work, further squeezing an already challenging livelihood.
The Human Connection Matters
Perhaps the greatest loss in this AI revolution is the erosion of the human connection in art. HARD STOP!
Art has always been a bridge between artist and audience—a way for the viewer to glimpse the world through another’s eyes, to feel the emotions embedded in the piece. AI lacks any emotional depth. It can replicate, but it cannot truly create. When we replace human artists with algorithms, we lose the opportunity to connect deeply with the art and, by extension, with each other.

Local artists are the heartbeat of our communities, bringing their diverse perspectives, histories, and stories to life in ways that no AI could ever hope to replicate. When we support them, we’re supporting more than just a pretty picture; we’re investing in culture, tradition, and shared experiences that enrich our lives.
So...How We Can Support Local Artists in the Age of AI
As consumers, we have the power to shape the art world. By consciously choosing to support local artists, commissioning work directly, and attending local galleries and events, we send a clear message that we value human creativity over digital mimicry. Legislation to protect artists’ rights, such as stricter copyright laws for AI-generated works, could also go a long way in ensuring that artists’ contributions are respected and compensated fairly.
Local artists need our support now more than ever, as they navigate a landscape increasingly dominated by AI. By standing with them, we preserve the richness of human creativity and ensure that art continues to be a reflection of the diverse, ever-evolving human experience.
Let’s remember that art isn’t just about the image—it’s about the story behind it, and that’s something no machine can replicate. Thanks for reading!
